About Coire

Coire Geare (they/she) has been playing, writing, and teaching music for nearly twenty years. They started off on viola, quickly switched to bass, and with that start a lifelong love affair with the instrument. After High School, they went on to study at Metropolitan State University of Denver with Ron Miles, Ron Bland, Greg Garrison, and Fred Hess. It was here that Coire truly discovered their passion for music beyond bass. They later transferred to CU Boulder and studied with Paul Erhard and Karl Fenner. Since their college experience, Coire has been teaching High School Orchestra, Mariachi, AP Music Theory, and History of Rock at Eaglecrest High School. When they aren't playing in venues and theaters around Denver, Coire takes their dog on regular sniffs, reads too many books at once, and yells at video games that are

too hard for them to play.

They have seen students of theirs attend such prestigious events as Colorado All State Orchestra, Western States Honors Orchestra, and Cherry Creek School District Honor Orchestra. The majority of their AP Music Theory students achieve at least a 3 on the exam, and they have helped many young people attending college improve their music theory grades by a letter grade or more.

Performance

Coire has performed a wide variety of music over the years, preferring not to limit themselves to a single genre or style or instrument. In addition to bass they have performed on guitar, piano, cello, and vocals as well as small cast parts in musical theater. In college, they played in Jazz Combos, Big Bands, Symphony Orchestras, the Boulder Laptop Orchestra (BLOrk), Pendulum, Graduate Jazz and Conducting Recitals, New Music Ensembles, the CU Wind Symphony, and in their own recitals. In addition, Coire has performed with many ensembles and companies over the years such as the Rachel Irvine Quartet, 90s rock cover band Dropshot, Goatstorm, Nova Somnia, Wild Beautiful Orchestra the Boulder Symphony, the Arapahoe Philharmonic, Boulder Opera Company, Vintage Theatre, Sasquatch Productions, Stagedoor Theatre, and the Denver Philharmonic Orchestra, with whom they performed in Munich, Germany. They also play with Bianca and the Flyboys, Atomic Fusion Initiative, and Tonic & Time as well as freelancing throughout the Denver area whenever they can. You can find video and audio of Coire in action here.

Composing and Arranging

While still at Metro State, Coire found a passion for theory and a fascination with composing. There, they studied composition with Fred Hess before transferring to CU where they studied Jazz Arranging with John Gunther. They have had their compositions and arrangements performed by ensembles at both Metro State and CU Boulder, as well as more recently in public schools. They regularly write and arrange for educational ensembles, tailoring the music to fit the needs and abilities of the student performers they are written for. Samples of their writing and arranging can be found here.
